We were approached to design a complete renewable heating solution incorporating an air source heat pump and underfloor heating with specific functional and control requirements.

The property was designed with insulation that exceeded building regulations, lowering heat losses to a minimum. The basement and ground floor areas were to be heated by underfloor heating using a pipe in screed system and complemented by an air source heat pump, providing heat at the lowest cost, but with highest efficiency. With a lot of glass specified into the ground floor design, there was also a requirement to distribute solar energy absorbed by the ground slab to the basement when the heat pump was switched off.
We recommended an Hitachi Yutaki-S split head heat pump to provide weather compensated 35°C flow temperatures to underfloor heating and 50°C to 300 litres domestic hot water. Additionally, individual heating zones for the ground floor and basement were created using complementary Hitachi thermostats with a control protocol, allowing heating circulators to energise on separate timers when the
heat pump is switched off and distributing solar gain to the basement.
An Emmeti underfloor heating system was installed and combined with Heatmiser Neo Smart thermostats throughout enabling the end user to control the heating from within the property.
