Family Home Renovation

When Ian and Louise Reading bought a detached four bedroom house in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, they saw huge potential to extend the front and back of the property to add more living space for their growing family.

A key part of their project involved incorporating underfloor heating (UFH) throughout their ground floor.

Why UFH?

Ian and Louise had experienced some of the key benefits associated with UFH when they had visited family and friends and they felt that it was a great opportunity to incorporate this into their home. As part of their extension project they opened up existing rooms to make their downstairs more open plan living, therefore losing some walls in the process. So choosing UFH meant that they could then free any remaining walls from conventional radiators.

With a young family Ian and Louise were also attracted to the improved air quality and well being benefits that UFH has to offer. Because it is a form of radiant heating, rather than convection heating, it means that harmful bacteria and pollen cannot circulate as freely, resulting in an improved air quality within the home.

Customer Specification

Ian and Louise knew they wanted UFH before they began their project, so when they started planning their extension they contacted TUS early on in the process to discuss their requirements so they could make the necessary allowances.

One of the key considerations was that the UFH system needed to work across both their existing concrete floor in the main part of the property, as well as the front and back extensions.

TUS Solution

WARMBOARD low profile overfloor system. A WARM-BOARD can be fitted directly above concrete or floorboards in both retro fit and new construction applications, with the potential for the direct application of tiles to the board. With its versatility it offers a quick and easy installation, particularly when it's planned earlier
on in an extension project like this one.

Ian and Louise also decided to incorporate the Heatmiser neoStat control system into their home – this revolutionary product means that they can now control their heating from anywhere!

Installation

From the outset Ian was keen to project manage the extension from start to finish. He was practically involved in the build, but also in the installation of the UFH system with the support of a certified plumber and electrician.

Ian said: "As we were working towards a tight budget I decided to get involved in as many aspects of the build as I could. I knew from research that underfloor heating can be self-installed. And for the most part, I discussed this with the guys at TUS. They produced a detailed design for me to follow and it proved straight forward to lay the boards and pipe.

We already had a plumber and an electrician on site to connect the system up, so it was a relatively simple and clean installation. The biggest advantage was that we could tile onto the floor straight away. This was a big factor in choosing this system over a liquid screed floor, which would have taken weeks to dry and slow up the rest of the trades coming in.

We are delighted with the end product. We already knew we were making the right decision by opting for underfloor heating over radiators, but it's been reafïrmed now that we've lived with it for a few months. I'd certainly recommend the WARMBOARD System to anyone considering underfloor heating in a project similar to ours, the speed and ease of installation was a god send!"
